The Looking Glass Jessica Arnold Books

Alice Montgomery isn't surprised when her younger brother picks a haunted hotel for their family vacation. She is surprised when she wakes up and doesn't know what's happened to her or why she can hear voices, but can't see anyone...until she looks in the mirror. Alice had hit her head while swimming in the hotel pool, but now her spirit is stuck in a strange, 19th century version of the hotel while her body is in a coma in her own time. When Alice discovers a diary by an 1880s inhabitant, the rumored insane and witchy Elizabeth Blackwell, she learns that the hotel is cursed, and she will be the next victim if she doesn't break it soon.

THE LOOKING GLASS is a completely mesmerizing novel. Much like Alice, I found myself transported to another world; but unlike Alice, it is a world I didn't want to leave. Jessica Arnold's writing pulls the reader in from the first chapter, and it doesn't let go until the very end. The scenes have a way of feeling so real that you might be glancing twice at the mirror while reading. I'm a huge fan of any retelling/reimagining, but what I love most about this book is that it has such a life of its own. It feels more inspired by the traditional Through the Looking Glass than a highly paralleled retelling (though both are great!), so whether you are big on Alice in Wonderland or not, you can easily find entertainment in these pages.

If you have any enjoyment in spooky tales with ghosts, mirrors that never seem to really reflect what they are shown, or curses all with a touch of romance and an intriguing crazy person, THE LOOKING GLASS is not one to miss. Overall, I just love the whole feel of this book, and the amazing and even surprising character development that Alice goes through. The ending answers just the right amount of questions, leaving you with a satisfied feeling of closure. I do wish I could have seen more of Alice prior to the hotel visit, but I did enjoy the scenes that gave great flashbacks to show her life before. Her story is happily on my favorites shelf, and I can't wait to see what Arnold writes next!

The Looking Glass Jessica Arnold Books Reviews

Could have used more of an ending.
Beautifully written. Strong main character. Miss Arnold really got into the head of a 14 year old girl.
The Looking Glass had me hooked from page 1. Arnold builds a mysterious world of mirrors and mist that's too compelling to look away from, with characters you won't want to leave behind. Besides the beautiful imagery in the story, I loved the humorous moments between the hotel manager and George and Tony. Really hoping for more soon from Jessica Arnold.
Very fun story that kept me engaged! It kept me wondering until the end which is what I like from my mysteries) I kind off want to visit this hotel...it looks beautiful in my head!
I totally agree with the very positive reviews written above. "The Looking Glass" is a well written novel with characters that come alive in your imagination. You have to read this book to appreciate the story written inside. Jessie has the gift to take a reader on an incredible journey
This is not your average Looking Glass re-telling. Teenage Alice Montgomery wakes up following a near death accident in a ghost house, haunted by its former witchy resident. She will have to figure out the prison the old B&B has become before it’s too late and she is never able to leave.

With a rich backstory that calls to mind shades of Charlotte Gilman’s The Yellow Wallpaper and subtle hints of Lewis Carrol peppered throughout, Arnold weaves a spooky and intriguing tale that will keep you hooked until the finish.

Whether you’re an Alice in Wonderland fan (I am) or not, this YA story is worth the read. Check it out!
The moment you pick up The Looking Glass you will be cursed. Yes, cursed in the way that you will then have to finish the book. Jessica Arnold does a fabulous job of ensnaring the reader from the get-go. Unfortunately for me, I began reading the first pages on a day when I had many other things going on. Therefore I didn't have the time to read it non-stop and throughout the day I kept having this strange feeling that I was trapped inside a hotel, unable to get out. I looked for every opportunity to get back to the book so I could find out what would happen next with Alice and whether she would be able to find a way to escape the hotel, and myself as well (in that sympathetic sense). The story is creepy, intriguing, well-written and clever. You'll find yourself caught up right along with Alice. Take a peek and you'll see. You'll finish the book!
