5 is for the best (would then try to read everything by the author)
4 for very good (definitely read a series or try another title by the author)
3 for enjoyable, 2 for I finished but wouldn't return soon and 1 for please don't waste your time

This was a solid 3 and I finished all books in the trilogy before writing. No spoilers, no content relating to the story here.

The good:
- Unique and original settings / worlds
- 'Some' interesting characters
- Some very good scene sequences
- Easy reading

The bad:
- 'Some' not interesting characters and fillers
- Inconsistencies in statements about characters or environments throughout the book
- At times, reads like a YA title especially with some statements by characters (which sometimes seem way out of place)

Not a bad read and was interested enough to finish all 3 but wouldn't say this is close to a 5 star or even a 4 star title. What kept me drawn in was the unique way to achieve greater skills, the primary character and one of the secondary. If you try the first, the 2nd and 3rd are very similar. If you don't like it, it doesn't necessarily get better, just an extension of the same style of writing.

House of Blades The Traveler Gate Trilogy Book 1 eBook Will Wight Reviews

“House of Blades” by Will Wight is a surprisingly good fantasy story. It’s told from the perspective of a young man named Simon who as a kid watches as he dad is murdered and his mother tortured by a pair a “travelers”. Travelers are people who can draw power from other realms and use it to not only travel between places, but also to summon creatures, powers, and weapons from those realms. Simon’s life is spared by a third traveler who moves in at the last moment and destroys the first two. Simon vows to return to the forest one day to be trained by the third traveler. Years later, Simon’s hometown is attacked under the authority of the overlord. Simon’s handicapped mother is killed, his hometown destroyed, his friends captured. He decides to take action and heads back to the forest in search of the traveler with the hopes to receive the training he needs so he can fight against the overlord and rescue his friends.
It was prophesied that one day a young man would immerge from this small town with powers not seen in ages. It was prophesied that this young man would set the people free. The problem is that Simon is NOT the young man prophesied about. His friend Alin is.

This is what makes Wight’s book so interesting. It is not told from the perspective of the “chosen one” but instead from a young man so determined to make a difference that he is willing to put his life on the line to do what he can to save his friends. He is flawed, overeager, and headstrong….and because of that makes some poor choices. And because of that, he’s instantly loveable and relatable.

Wight’s book is flawed. There are gaps here and there that should have provided additional information, but instead move ahead too quickly. There are a few places that the book feels incomplete and Wight would have been better served by taking his time and making the book a little longer instead of cutting it short and leaving out details that really were needed. That aside, the book is a lot of fun to read and very enjoyable. I’m excited to read the rest of the trilogy and recommend this one without hesitation.
If you're like me and can't seem to find a decent book in the fantasy genre anymore then you should check this series out.

The best way to explain it is to say it is roughly what the Wheel of Time series would have been like if it were a trilogy and written from the point of view of someone who wasn't "the one." It's actually an interesting, and sometimes humorous, take on the usual fantasy prescription. To be honest I didn't really expect much from the book but after reading the free sample I bought it with the justification that the sample was decent enough to see where it goes from there. I'm glad I did. Worth every penny and the better part of two days that I put into reading it (and the same for the sequel).

The good

- The author doesn't drown you in minutiae about all the crap you really don't care about when describing a scene, room, place, person, or whatever. I liked Robert Jordan but half of each of his books were describing the details of a piece of trim in the corner of the room or some such. No such thing here. You get the idea and can picture it in your mind without falling asleep or skipping pages to get to the interesting part. The story is almost always progressing as you read.

- One of the most interesting magic systems I have seen in a long long time. Simple but clever.

- The important people are believable. There is some depth and complexity to all of the important main and side characters.

The bad

- The lack of detail does sometimes get in the way of an otherwise engrossing story. I didn't always get a good feel for what someone or something looked like. It's not enough to ruin things entirely. Just a weak point.

- The point of view changes were informative but I felt like they took away from the story subtly. The side characters who got their 15 minutes of fame weren't important (and lasting) enough to warrant an actual point of view from the perspective of the story as a whole.

- The story feels a little rough around the edges. Not first draft rough, jut not quite as polished as it could be. I feel like it could have been expanded a little to give a... richer experience. You didn't get the "the world is alive and changing" feeling that you get with some of the more accomplished authors.

Final thoughts

Despite the bad points I listed above, the series is really quite engaging and a very good read. The author's bio says he is only 23 which would go a long way to explaining why some of the work feels the way it does. All in all, this is a very promising start in the fantasy genre for someone with a real talent for clever story. In another 10 years, with more experience, I fully expect his writing to be spectacular. It's good, just not "great" - yet.
5 is for the best (would then try to read everything by the author)
